  • This cumulative dissertation examines how individual AI use and organizational AI adoption are related and under which conditions AI can become sustainably embedded in organizations. It starts from the observation that AI is increasingly used in private everyday life in accessible and experimental ways, while AI use in the workplace often remains situational and organizational AI adoption frequently does not progress beyond pilot stages despite technical maturity. The dissertation argues that these differences cannot be explained by a single adoption logic. Instead, sustainable AI embedding is conceptualized as a multilevel process in which individual perception, workplace use practices, and organizational embed-ding systematically interact. The study distinguishes three analytical levels: individual AI use in everyday life, individual AI use in the workplace, and organizational AI adoption. These levels are examined in three empirical studies and brought together in a fourth study. Study 1 shows that AI aversion is strongly shaped by the miscalibration between subjective and objective AI knowledge. Study 2 reconstructs the transition from experimentation to routinized AI use in the workplace and shows that this transition may fail at motivational, situational, and organizational thresholds. Study 3 demonstrates that organizational AI adoption can be blocked by role conflicts, role ambiguity, and a lack of cross-functional coordination despite technical feasibility. Study 4 brings together these findings into a cross-context explanatory framework and suggests that private AI experiences may facilitate entry into workplace AI use, but do not automatically result in stable use in the workplace or in organizational adoption. Rather, this depends on bridging and connection conditions such as task value, approved tools, verification routines, role clarity, and governance. The dissertation’s central contribution lies in conceptualizing AI use and AI adoption not as separate phenomena, but as an interconnected embedding process. Sustainable AI embedding thus emerges from the interplay of subjective perception, routinized use practices, and organizational embedding.
