  • Photocatalytic reactions are relatively fast, if the catalyst is dispersed in the reaction medium. If an immobilized catalyst is used, as it is desirable in chemical industry, the reaction rate decreases. Using fiber optic cable reactors, it is possible to irradiate the catalyst homogeneously and to increase the quantum yield of the reaction. In this work, a radiation model was developed, which includes the radiation characteristic of an LED in more detail as it was done in the literature. Instead of a single ray or a parallel ray bundle, a Lambertian characteristic was assumed. Furthermore Fresnel reflection was considered at the fibers surface. When the radiation is decoupled, two limiting cases were assumed, ideal rough surfaces and ideal smooth surfaces. If ideal rough surfaces are used, a fast decay of the radiation on a relatively short path length was observed. In this case a part of the radiation is lost to the environment. Furthermore some of the formed radicals cannot be used, due to their fast recombination. Increasing the convection, increases the reaction rate. If ideal smooth surfaces are used, most of the radiation is used to activate the catalyst. Since there are only low radiation intensities on the surface, only a few radicals are formed. Thus, they do not recombine so fast and the quantum yield is increased.
