Konvektiver Feuchtetransport durch Leckagen in Holzleichtbaukonstruktionen mit permeablen Dämmstoffen

Convective moisture transfer through leakages in lightweight timber frame constructions with permeable insulation materials

  • Lightweight timber frame constructions are sensitive to perforations of the inward-facing layers. These may lead to leakage flows in case of structures with air permeable insulation and regular air permeable exterior layers. This work investigates the buildup of convective moisture in the bay section of lightweight timber frame constructions through single leakages. The potential for the air flow through leakages is a result of the acting pressure difference between the interior and the exterior of a building. Hence, pressure differences at the enveloping surface of several buildings in different regions of Germany over 5 heating periods are analyzed and evaluated in the first part of this work. It is shown that the frequency of pressure differences is distributed skew-symmetrically. The pressure difference at the building envelope is influenced by buoyancy and acting wind. The pressure differences depend also on the orientation of the wind relative to the building envelope, the building’s regional setting and its site (with respect to neighboring buildings, trees, open spaces etc.). Furthermore, the airtightness of the building and the leakage distribution in the building envelope influence the pressure difference. In the second part of this work, the principles of air flow through single leakages in lightweight timber frame constructions are presented and analyzed using a patented measurement setup and method. The results show that the volumetric flow and the discharge coefficient of leakages in inward-facing layers are amongst others affected by the shape, size and edge properties of the leakage. The results of leakage flow measurements through lightweight timber frame constructions show that the properties of leakages in the outer layer are insignificant for the calculation of the leakage flow. It is shown that the air flow behind the leakage opens up conically in the mineral fiber insulation material. The spread of the air flow in the insulation material can be calculated using the smallest volume of insulation material through which an air flow is possible. The permeability of the insulation material at realistic pressure differences is the determining factor for this calculation. Finally, a practical analytical calculation model is presented. Using this model, the volumetric flow through a single leak in the bay section of lightweight timber frame constructions with permeable mineral insulation material may be calculated with an average accuracy of ±12 %. The envelope surface infiltration through a single leak is calculated for a heating period, using a quasi-steady state calculation method which includes realistic pressure differences on a building envelope. The plausibility of the results is proven by examining a case of damage. With the results of the calculation an evaluation of the potential damage due to convective moisture entry is possible.
