  • Aldehydes and alcohols are important substances in many technical applications. In solutions of aldehydes and alcohols, hemiacetals are formed. For the design of technical processes with reactive substances, reliable information of the thermodynamic properties, especially the chemical equilibrium, is needed. For many years, modelling thermodynamic properties of formaldehyde solutions has been a research topic at the University of Kaiserslautern (see for example Hasse [Has90], Peschla [Pes00], Albert [Alb98], Kuhnert [Kuh03]). In the present work, experimental and theoretical investigations about the reactivity of higher aldehydes with alcohols are done. The experimental results are compared with predictions from quantum chemical calculations to study the possibilities of quantum chemical methods to solve thermodynamic problems on the basis of a technical important example. Quantitative \( ^{13}\)C-NMR-spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the investigation of reaction equilibria and was used to analyse the chemical equilibria. In the present study, mixtures of seven aldehydes and three alcohols were analysed at the temperatures 295 K, 273 K and 255 K. The equilibrium constant K\(_x\) dependent on concentration was determined from the \( ^{13}\)C-spectra. To get the equilibrium constant K independent on concentration, a correction term to K\(_x\) was calculated, K\(_\gamma\). The required activity coefficients for K\(_\gamma\) are calculated with the group contribution method "modified UNIFAC Dortmund". Because the consideration of K\(_\gamma\) did not lead to one consistent equilibrium constant K, K\(_\gamma\) is not included in the further investigations. The used quantum chemical method for the calculations was the density functional theory (DFT) method B3LYP in combination with the small Pople basis set 6-31G(d) scale and the Dunning basis set cc-pVTZ scale. Most calculations were done with the smaller basis set 6-31G(d) scale. The used software package was Gaussian 03. It was tried to find all stable conformers for all investigated molecules. There are different possibilities to consider the different conformers. In this work, three different variants are used to calculate the equilibrium constant: Variant I considers only the lowest energy conformer of the molecules. Variant II uses the averaged Gibbs energies of the detected conformers of each molecule and variant III utilizes the averaged equilibrium constants of all conformer combinations (cp. 4.2.3.1). All quantum chemical calculations are gas phase calculations. To compare the calculated results with the experimental values of the equilibrium constants which are liquid phase results, it is necessary to translate the values for K\(_{Gas}\) in liquid phase. The required vapour pressures of the pure compounds are calculated with Antoine equation or if no Antoine parameters are available with four different methods that are integrated in the used program ProPred: Joback/Reid, Constantinou/Gani, Marrero/Gani and Wilson. The values of the equilibrium constants that are calculated with B3LYP 6-31G(d) scale are up to three orders of magnitude smaller than the experimental values. The mixtures with the aromatic aldehyde 2-chlorobenzaldehyde offer the biggest deviations between experiment and calculation. The vapour pressure method of Joback/Reid causes values of the equilibrium constants that conform best with the experimental values. However, this method is not able to show the experimental trend in the equilibrium constants: A rising alkyl chain length of the aldehydes leads to a smaller value of the equilibrium constant. Only the calculated values with variant II in combination with the methods of Marrero/Gani, Constantinou/Gani or Wilson can describe the same trend of K\(_x\) as in the experimental results. Only the vapour pressure method of Wilson is independent of the variant able to describe the experimental trend in the equilibrium constants with rising alkyl chain length of the alcohol: Rising alkyl chain length leads to smaller values of the equilibrium constants. The values of the equilibrium constants that are calculated with B3LYP 6-31G(d) scale are in part in a good agreement with the experimental values. These surprisingly good results are probably the effect of a compensation of different simplifying assumptions. The values of the equilibrium constants that are calculated with B3LYP cc-pVTZ scale are dependent from the observed system and variant up to three till six orders of magnitude smaller than the experimental values. The mixtures with the aromatic aldehyde 2-chlorobenzaldehyde offer also with the bigger basis set the biggest deviations between experiment and calculation. The analysis of the values of the calculated equilibrium constants shows that only the values with variant I in combination with the methods of Marrero/Gani, Constantinou/Gani or Wilson can describe the same trend of K\(_x\) as in the experimental results (rising alkyl chain length of the aldehydes leads to a smaller value of the equilibrium constant). With all three variants, the experimentally observed influence of alkyl chain length of the alcohol can only be described with the vapour pressure method of Wilson. Because of the big derivations between the calculated and experimental values of the equilibrium constants, the differences between the different vapour pressure methods are irrelevant. The combination of B3LYP with cc-pVTZ scale is not able to reproduce well the values of the experimental results of the equilibrium constant, regardless of which variant or vapour pressure method was used. Both combinations (B3LYP 6-31G(d) scale and B3LYP cc-pVTZ scale) can describe the influence of the temperature of the values of the equilibrium constants quantitatively. All three variants show only with the vapour pressure method of Wilson the experimental observed trend in the values of the equilibrium constants. However, the values of the equilibrium constants that are calculated with B3LYP cc-pVTZ scale are up to three till four orders of magnitude smaller than the experimental values.
